Corea del Sur y la creación de un Sol artificial para generar energía ilimitada La energía que produce el Sol llega a todas las personas del mundo a través del espacio en forma de partículas de luz –fotones– y radiación –calor– para aprovecharse en forma de energía térmica o energía fotoeléctrica, más tarde reflejada en tarifas de luz que abastecen cientos de miles de hogares en todo el mundo- Sin embargo, la necesidad humana de encontrar nuevas fuentes de energía ha provocado que surjan nuevos proyectos que intentan ser una alternativa a esta estrella que brilla con luz propia. KSTAR, el proyecto más ambicioso de energía de fusión nuclear Hace tres años, el Instituto Coreano de Energía de Fusión (KIFE, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció que KSTAR –su proyecto de Sol artificial para generar energía a partir de la fusión nuclear– pudo calentar plasma a 100 millones de grados centígrados durante un período de 30 segundos. Por consiguiente, este hito supuso una nueva forma de conseguir energía eficiente, barata, limpia e ilimitada en la Tierra simulando el funcionamiento del Sol.  Crear plasma supercaliente, siete veces más caliente que el Sol, es sólo la mitad de la batalla. El reactor toroidal también debe contener el plasma durante largos periodos de tiempo, lo que no es nada fácil, además de que esta energía debe ser sencilla de transportar una vez llegue a los distribuidores energéticos de cada país.  Aunque recientemente, el KIFE ha creado un nuevo desviador de tungsteno que permitirá multiplicar por diez esa cantidad de tiempo para elevarla hasta los 300 segundos, de esta manera, gestionará las impurezas generadas en el reactor y permitirá la salida de gases residuales. ¿Qué son los desviadores? Los desviadores son enormemente cruciales para los reactores tokamak. Instalados en el fondo de la vasija de vacío, estos dispositivos gestionan los gases de escape y las impurezas, y deben soportar las mayores cargas térmicas superficiales. Anteriormente, el tokamak KSTAR utilizaba un desviador basado en carbono, ya que éste tiene un punto de fusión elevado.  Sin embargo, el único problema era que las partículas de plasma tendían a adherirse a la superficie de carbono, lo que limitaba la duración de la reacción. El tungsteno, con un punto de fusión igual de alto pero una masa atómica mayor, evita este problema y permite al KSTAR crear reacciones que duran minutos en lugar de segundos. Otros proyectos y una valoración al futuro El KSTAR rivaliza con otros proyectos internacionales, como el Toro Europeo Común (JET) en el Reino Unido, y el JT-60SA, un proyecto conjunto de Europa y Japón que se encuentra en el país nipón. Estos buscan producir una cantidad de energía mucho mayor que la suministrada para iniciar el proceso de reacción. Iberdrola pone en marcha el mayor parque eólico marino de Estados Unidos

Iberdrola ha iniciado la puesta en marcha del parque eólico marino 'Vineyard Wind I', el primer proyecto a gran escala de esta tecnología en Estados Unidos, con 806 megavatios (MW) de capacidad, ha informado este jueves la compañía que preside Ignacio Sánchez Galán.

Vineyard Wind I: Inversión y abastecimiento

En concreto, la instalación ha comenzado ya a suministrar energía verde a Massachusetts, Estado al que abastecerá de electricidad eólica y de luz a más de 400.000 hogares, lo que supone más de la mitad de una ciudad como Boston o a toda la isla de Mallorca, ha destacado la compañía.

El proyecto, que espera tener cinco turbinas funcionando a pleno rendimiento en los primeros compases del año, ha contado con 3.000 millones de dólares de inversión (más de 2.700 millones de euros al cambio actual) garantizados mediante contratos con las tres principales empresas eléctricas del Estado.

El parque comenzó su construcción en 2021 y estará en pleno funcionamiento este mismo año, evitando la emisión de más de 1,6 millones de toneladas de CO2 al año. Cada una de las turbinas, cuyas piezas de transición han sido fabricadas por la asturiana Windar Renovables, permitirá proporcionar energía a más de 6.000 hogares y empresas.

Un precedente para la industria eólica en EEUU

Formadas por una torre, tres palas y una góndola, cuentan con una capacidad nominal de 13 megavatios (MW), "lo que la convierte en la turbina más grande del mundo occidental", según ha remarcado Iberdrola, que ha añadido que, con una sola rotación, esta turbina puede suministrar energía a un hogar de Massachusetts durante todo un día.

"Estamos entregando la primera energía eólica marina limpia a la red de Massachussets. Estamos en un momento decisivo para la acción climática en Estados Unidos y estamos viviendo un amanecer para la industria eólica marina del país. A medida que la capacidad de este proyecto histórico se vaya poniendo en marcha, seguiremos apoyando a todos los socios que han hecho posible este logro con el objetivo de abaratar la factura de la luz en los hogares de Massachussets.", ha subrayado Pedro Azagra, consejero delegado de Avangrid, filial estadounidense de Iberdrola.

Avangrid y el grupo inversor danés Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), copropietario del proyecto, anunciaron el pasado mes de octubre que 'Vineyard Wind 1' había cerrado un paquete de capital fiscal por valor de 1.200 millones de dólares (unos 1.135 millones de euros), siendo éste el primero de su tipo para energía eólica marina a escala comercial con tres bancos con sede en Estados Unidos.

Empresas de otros países que han participado en el proyecto

La empresa española Windar Renovables ha sido la encargada de fabricar las 62 cimentaciones de los aerogeneradores. El contrato, por un importe cercano a los 100 millones de euros, ha supuesto la creación de cerca de 400 empleos en sus instalaciones de Asturias.

Por su parte, la italiana Prysmian Group se ha ocupado de la puesta en marcha del sistema de cable submarino que conecta el parque eólico marino con la red eléctrica continental de Estados Unidos. En total, se han requerido más de 134 kilómetros de cable eléctrico de corriente alterna de alto voltaje.

La empresa estadounidense Southwire, por su parte, se ha encargado del diseño, la fabricación y la instalación de los más de 51 kilómetros de cable de alta tensión terrestre.

En julio de 2023 se terminó la instalación de la subestación marina, que dará servicio a todo el proyecto de Vineyard Wind I. Es la primera subestación de este tipo instalada por Iberdrola en Estados Unidos y la sexta en el mundo, con un peso mayor a las 5.000 toneladas, lo cual la convierte en la más grande que ha instalado la compañía en su historia.
